Retrieval of Sea Surface Skin Temperature from the High Resolution Picture Transmission Data of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Series Satellites

The High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) data of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) series meteorological satellites had been received by SeaSpace ground station located at Ocean University China (OUC). Based on atmospheric radiative transfer model, we obtained NOAA-15/16/17/18/19 Advanced Very Radiometer (AVHRR) sea surface skin temperature (SSTskin) using Bayesian cloud detection method optimal estimation (OE) (SST) retrieval algorithm. Compared with NOAA/AVHRR multi-channel SST data, AVHRR SSTskin have higher accuracy. We also compared buoy spatial temporal windows 0.01° 30 min. daytime biases ranged from −0.32 °C (NOAA-16) to 0.08 (NOAA-17) standard deviations (SDs) ranging 0.36 (NOAA-18/ NOAA-19) 0.60 (NOAA-16), nighttime −0.26 −0.02 SDs 0.33 (NOAA-19) (NOAA-16). accuracy all five satellite during was significantly improved. These results show that NOAA is good consistent in different periods, products high resolution can be used for mesoscale submesoscale marine applications.
